What is Ayurveda?

Ancient Ayurveda

The human body is one with the entire universe; and like everything in the universe, we are born with a combination of natural elements. The “Five Elements”; Agni (fire), Akasa (sky), Jala (water), Prthvi (earth) and Vayu (Air), comprise everything that exist. All of these play an important role of who we are, what we are, what we eat, drink, how we react and even what we will become in the future. Ayurvedic treatments are derived from Ayurveda; this natural method of healing dates back to the ancient Vedic period in India; this natural alternative treatment is all about following an Ayurvedic diet, using Ayurvedic herbs and taking Ayurvedic medicine in treating illnesses.

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurvedic TreatmentAyurveda is the traditional practice of healing in India which is considered the oldest ways of treating illnesses and probably the oldest health care system in the world. Ayurveda has many principles and one of this is healthful living by keeping in mind the balance of three elements or energies.

  • Vayu – which represents wind, air and space
  • Pitta – which represents bile, fire and water
  • Kapha – which represents phlegm, water and earth

In Ayurvedic treatment, each person has a particular Ayurvedic body type which is a combination of these three elements. Almost all Ayurvedic remedies are focused in reviving the body’s balance which is believed to be lost while he is sick, depressed, unable to sleep, anxious and afflicted with any kind of health condition. There are so many ways that Ayurveda may be used, to name a few; here are the most common applications of Ayurveda treatments to these days:

  • Ayurvedic medicine for weight loss – weight loss as well as being underweight is believed to be caused by an imbalance of the vata, pitta and kapha; an imbalance may be due to the body’s inability to metabolize nutrients and improper digestion. The Ayurvedic approach is to first determine your body type and total body recovery through nourishing the body system to its healthy state.Ayurvedic Treament for Diabetes
  • Ayurvedic treatment for diabetes – diabetes is considered an imbalance of the kapha system; in Ayurveda, there are 24 types of diabetes and are treated using specific Ayurvedic herbs, modification of the patient’s diet, complete lifestyle overhaul and Panchakarma or cleansing.
  • Ayurvedic treatment for psoriasis – in Ayurveda, psoriasis is an imbalance in the vata and kapha systems which are revived by Panchakarma, detoxification, removal of body toxins and by inducing vomiting. It is believed that psoriasis as well as other skin disorders are a result of the accumulation of low potency toxins which is why most of the treatment is geared towards removing poisons and total body cleansing.
  • Ayurvedic treatment for hair loss – in Ayurveda, an imbalance of the pitta is the most common reason for alopecia or hair loss. The pitta system suffers an imbalance when a person increases intake of alcohol, coffee, tea and by chronic smoking. Aside from using herbs to treat hair loss, meditation, deep breathing, yoga exercises and Ayurvedic oil massages are needed to rejuvenate the scalp and the hair follicles.
  • Ayurvedic massage – very different from traditional massages from other cultures since massage using Ayurveda principles involve techniques that will release “negative energy” ultimately leading to healing, cleansing, relaxation and better sleep. Massage techniques are all about arousing the senses and are oftentimes described as hard massage. It also involves using oils, traditional massage mats and chairs while the head and neck are not supported like other types of massage.
